In October 2010, I was half-heartedly making phone calls to any agency doing anything in my newly assigned neighborhood for a city beat. I dialed the city’s Habitat for Humanity office and asked if there was any construction happening between such and such streets. ”No,” he replied. ”But there’s a group of guys you might be interested in.”
Since 1991, a close-knit group of retirees has
helped to build 75 percent of the Habitat for Humanity homes in Columbia,
and they have no plans to stop anytime soon.
