Citizens for Justice

My editor called me into her office one morning to say a big announcement was coming from the local police department, and she thought a little-known local advocate named Matthew Akins may have something to do with it.

The announcement turned out having nothing to do with Akins or his group, but I followed him around for a few weeks anyway.  And even if you don’t agree with his stance, he remains a very interesting, very intelligent, and very dedicated young man.

Though funds are limited and the volunteers sometimes don’t show up, Akins has still managed to strike a nerve in this city, fast becoming a resource for people who feel the system of justice doesn’t work for them, while at the same time garnering the full attention of a police force unaccustomed to the other side of surveillance.
